Last Saturday 1/23/16, we had this epic snowstorm, when 34 inches of snow fell in Jackson Heights, the most in the whole city, according to New York Magazine’s Daily Intelligencer. The storm was called Winter Storm Jonas. It was so snowy, that people were lying down in the street! When can you do that in NYC?!
Snowstorms seem pretty rare in New York City, especially ones that snow more than 2 feet! The city and the mayor did pretty well, but the streets in Jackson Heights weren’t cleared for a very long time, mostly the snow just melted and plows didn’t come. There’s still some snow under the cars, and maybe some on the side of the streets, too.
Jonas was a great opportunity for us to have a day off from school, but by Monday it was clean enough to go. That was a bummer, but good thing we got some great sledding in on Sunday at a big hill in Woodside. There were lots of collisions during the sledding, especially kids slamming in to the adults at the bottom of the hill and knocking them off their feet.
Other activities in the snow were skiing, snowball fights, and building snow forts. My Mom told me that 2 guys built an igloo in Brooklyn and tried to rent it. That’s crazy. Winter Storm Jonas was a great time in my life, and I won’t forget that weekend. I wish it would snow like that every day.
