A good friend of mine Mark W. Guay is a writer for theHuffington Post and he featured our class in his blog, "The Mindful Classroom." He writes about our morning meditation, singing bowl, yoga with Carla, and our fundraiser.

Mindful Listening

Picture

  • Singing Bowl- Students listen to the sound of the singing bowl and raise hands when they can't hear the sound anymore.
  • Layers of Sound- Students listen to hear things outside of classroom, inside of the classroom, and in their bodies. Students share with group what they heard.

Mindful Breathing

Picture

  • Hoberman Sphere- As the Hoberman Sphere opens students inhale. As the Hoberman Sphere closes students exhale.
  • Anchor Breath- Students practice breathing from their belly, chest, mouth, and nose
  • Anchor Words- Tell students when to "Breathe In" and when to "Breathe Out"

Mindful Minutes

Sometimes we just need a minute! Stop the class when things are going bad or stop the class when things are going well. Students stay silent as they breathe and regroup.

Don't forget to discuss:
  • What did you notice?
  • Where did you feel that in your body?
  • How do you feel now?

SHARK

Sit up straight. Sit still. Sit silently. Sit with soft bodies and breathing. Shut eyes.

Sometimes students don't feel safe closing their eyes. They can sit looking at a spot on the ground.
